It happens to me too, and not just with awesome; with xfce, GNOME, wmii,
etc, it works like that.

Maybe it is a Xorg issue. If you restart X again and again it will work
at TTY 8.

I used archlinux, with the same Xorg version, and debian squeeze/sid too. The
behavior is the same... in both Xorg versions.

So, answering your question: for me, it is normal :)
