I think you could consider it like this: Hmmm, I'd only like to deal with XML literal input Grrrr, I get all these stupid url encoded forms, some SOAP requests, some XML-RPC requests, and a few gets... Ahhh, OK, wouldn't it be nice if I could create an INPUT PIPELINE that specified how to transform all of these things into some single type of data (literal XML, whatever), which then IS my 'content' for the outgoing pipeline. It really just becomes a more modular way of composing services.
