OK, I normally I wouldn't change the title of the thread, but this is such a FANTASTIC record to learn to read from. Everyone who needs to learn how to read the documents should try this one. So I renamed it to get your attention.
The old thread (Translation Help) was that Beverly needs to learn how to read a baptism record for Roza. The priest has beautiful handwriting and I don't think there are any abbreviations. (Sidenote: I just happened to be reading my mail in Firefox. I just clicked on the link. Guess what? It opened up! Is CCA site now working in Firefox?) Now, if you were hunting for your ancestor in this time period, I would be looking for 3 things based on this priest's penmanship. 1) The words "filha legitima" (or filho legitimo for a boy). These words appear about half way into the document. Also the way some letters are formed involve longer strokes of the pen. The letters f, l, h (in filha) and l, g, and t (in legitima) involve longer strokes. So have your eyes focus on things that go like / / / / for the longer stroke. If you are learning to read, I'd look for this in other records as well. 2) After you find these words, you'd look about 2 lines before for "nome de ______". Name of ____ The priest wrote Roza kind of large. The one to the left of Roza is Celestino. The above two ways are very typical to search for a record. However, this priest does something that not all priests do. He puts parenthesis in the document. (primera do nome). That says "first of the name." Have your eyes focus on finding the ( ) in the document. Then look about 2 lines up for the "nome de ____." I'd actually be hunting for my ancestors this third way because it's easier to look for the parenthesis. Once you find your ancestor, you will have to learn to read it. Some words will be hyphenated and some will be runtogether (run together) so watch out for that. I will run the words together for you too in this translation, but I'll slash it so you know: run/together. NOTE: This time period starts with the baptism date first and the birth date is buried in the document. I, Pres- 6) byterian (huh?) Florianno Joze Soares vicar of the/same freguezia 7) baptize solemnly e _____ of the Holy oils ___ ___- 8) ____ of the sex feminine to whom I gave the/name of Roza , that 9) she was born at the seven hours of the afternoon of the day three of the month of Mar- 10) ch of the same year, daughter legitimate (first of the name) of 11) Joao de Souza de Alvardo (the g above is messing with me in reading this name) worker, and/of Anna da Con- 12) ceicao received (married) in this freguezia and/of the same par- 13) ish and/living (they are parishoners and live in Velhas); granddaughter paternal of Domingos Joze de Qua- 14) dros and/of Maria Jozefa (space in Joze fa), and/maternal of Nicolau de Souza 15) de Avila and/of Maria da Conceicao. Godparents Joao de Sou- 16) za d'Avila worker and/his wife Maria Margarida 17) living in this same (space in the word same) freguezia. The rest I don't translate. Loosely, it says that it was read back, drawn up in duplicate, godparents can't write, blah, blah, blah. BUT this one is saying something about Joao Jose de Souza, married of this same freguesia.
