In 1905, my great great grandfather Manuel Jose Pereira, age 46 came
to East Cambridge Massachusetts with his family: Maria Jose S.
Pereira, 32, Maria Pereira, 14, Serafim Pereira age 12, and Celestine
Pereira age 6 (The youngest, Angelina was not born yet). Records show
that there was an American based contact by the name of Jose Mello.
He was Manuel’s brother in law living at 3 Lawland Street in East
Cambridge. The Mello’s home was jokingly referred to as “the white
house” through the years because extended family and friends often
utilized his home as an immigration pit stop. After their 1905 arrival
they evidently returned to Sao Miguel. In 1911, Every one returned
again but this time with out Brother Serafin Pereira. He joined the
family 4 years later after marrying his new wife Honorinda Coloura.

Maria Jose Pereira’s maiden must have been Soares or Moreira. I am
assuming this because the record below plainly states that Manuel’s
father in law was “Antonio Soares Moreira”. The entire family was born
in Fenais da Ajuda on the island of Saint Michael. Manuel’s brother
in law Jose Mello and his wife Gloria Pereira Mello then lived at 129
Fifth Street in Cambridge in 1911. By 1920, Manuel and Maria left
their adult children in Cambridge and returned to Ribeira Grande,
Azores where they lived the rest of their lives until about 1950. I
am told they owned and ran a store.

I am also researching my great grandfather Anibal Bento (some times
referred to as Annibale Bento. He married the daughter mentioned
above in 1915. These are the parents of my grand mother Mary Bento
Vieira from East Cambridge 1918-2000.

I am hoping to get in touch with other people searching Pereira,
Mello, or Bento surnames. I have run into a road block utilizing
www.ancestry.com and I am looking for any advice from other searchers.
