Sorry, but I think thats an exaggeration 
Its possible his school education is not so advanced. My niece that lived with 
me
since she was a kid, learned portuguese from me, when she went to Portugal, her
only difficulties were the portuguese accent, not the language itself, and she 
learned brazilian portuguese. I think it depends on the person.

I don't know if I can explain it really but Brazilian portuguese is 
significantlly different from european portuguese. I think Brazilian portuguese 
has a much stronger relationship to spanish. My friend who is from Brazil, 
often has a difficult time translated the european portuguese for me.
