Marie BV, Mine were 13 and 16. Except a 13 or a 16 year old back around 1900 was very different than a 13 or 16 year old today. I don't think the concept of "teenager" hit America until American high school started to gain ground. By the 1950s, teenagers were pretty established. I'm sure 13 and 16 year olds around 1900 could run a household fairly well. When I ran the detention room, I found 13 year olds who didn't know how to operate a vacuum cleaner!
I don't know of any job or occupation records. New England was full of mills. See if you can borrow a copy of "Portuguese Spinner." It tells what life was like for them in a variety of occupations. See if the WorldCat has it and you can borrow it. I think someone (Jesse Pacheco?) checked out a copy from his local library somewhere in MA or RI. I'm not sure where Jesse actually lives.
