Carol, Have you contacted the Portuguese Project on Martha's Vineyard to see what, if any, info they have ? The 2 volume book I have does show some Wood/ Woods families, but their names don't appear on the website. Another reason I felt somewhat perplexed earlier. The society has been very helpful in the past.
The last time I was in contact with the island's historical society, the contact person was Chris Baer (I think that's how he spelled his name. ) Also, the book Ships of our Ancestors shows a SS Northern Star. Could this be the one he came over on ? Finally, have you looked at the NEPs website for Faial ? It has some, not all, records listed. Happy hunting.
