Karen,

I probably could answer your question of why your grandmother came a year after
her parents. The cost of the voyage.

My grandmother came to the US when she was 4. She traveled with 2 aunts and an
uncle. Her parents were already here. I wish I had asked her way back when as
to why her parents came almost a whole year ahead of her when she was so young.
They all came in through Rhode Island and settled in New Bedford. Some stayed
there for a while. Others left right away for Mendocino County in California.

When it comes to women leaving the Azores to come to the USA, is there any
typical situation that would bring them over? coming with parents? coming with
husband? would they have traveled over with an older or younger brother? Would
she have traveled over alone if another family member already here?
I'm trying to find a clue to connect my great aunt Francisca to my great
grandfather Jose to maybe narrow down some of the search results for traveling
into the USA
