There could be a link between not finding registries in the 1500's with the persecution of Jews in Europe. Many Jews left Portugal to Acores and Brazil to avoid the tight control of the Catholic Church. I have a feeling part of my family was converted to Catholicism by force. the church performed mass "stand up" baptisms at the port and I bet they were not very interested on paper cords of those leaving that were considered as performing heresy against the "holy" church.
