I know I've shared my back-up strategy before. I'm sure many will see this as
extreme, but I've worked with computers for over 20 years in records management
and I am very cautious.
First, even with diversified destinations (cloud, hard drive, USB, DVD, etc.),
you will want at least two different methods of backup. I have seen many
programs getting upgraded/patched and either not actually backing up files or,
believe it or not, scrambling the content (encryption gone very bad!)
As for myself:
Mozy: cloud based backup
SyncBack Free to: 32GB SDHC card 32GB USB Flash drive (periodically) 500GB
USB Fire/Waterproof hard drive (sentrysafe) 8TB NAS Drive (RAID5) 3TB USB
Hard Drive
Program (application): FTM to NAS Quicken to NAS
Nero Burning ROM: Gold layer DVD
Now this is overkill for most people, but I have had problems before to teach
me to be very protective.
One last note, it is also easy to lose track of backups (especially with the
number I keep). Be sure to use encryption on your backups to keep them
private. Just don't lose the passwords!

Hooray, we figured it out and now I have my FTM16 program and files on the
Windows 7 computer. Now to try and figure out what I did in the last 2 1/2
years to update my main family file. I kept a lot on paper so I think I can
recapture most of it. Now I am going to have 2 backups that I keep backing up
every day!! A lesson learned.

We tried what you sent to us as well as one we got off the net. We managed to
install FTM but it only shows one very short family file. It does not list all
the all the family files I originally had and the really BIG and most IMPORTANT
one. I have lost the last 2 1/2 years of what I put on FTM16 on my Windows 7
computer. I had a backup but for some reason that got erased when we were
trying to figure out what was wrong with Windows 7. Unfortunately we had the
backup plugged in when we were doing this and it erased everything on the disk.
Note to self: NEVER do this again!! I do have all the previous 8 years of
entries on my old Windows XP computer which we put on a memory stick and have
been trying reinstall on my Windows 7 computer ; it looks like FTM is
installed??? but it only shows this one file which only has 5 names on it!!
Any other ideas anyone??
