HI Margaret,

Thank you for that. I think this may be the Manuel I'm looking for, son of
Antonio, but it might not be because, as Cheri and I are discussing above,
there could be any number of Manuel Machados married to a Maria do Rozario.
The problem is that, while I now have this baptismal record and I already
have what I think is his marriage record (here
<http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/GRA-SC-SAOMATEUS-C-1808-1825/GRA-SC-SAOMATEUS-C-1808-1825_item1/P74.html>)

that also mentions Antonio, when you look at Manuel's son's baptismal (here
<http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/GRA-SC-SAOMATEUS-B-1826-1833/GRA-SC-SAOMATEUS-B-1826-1833_item1/P84.html>),

his grandmother (and Manuel's mother) Roza Maria is listed as "solteiro" or
"single." That may be some of the confusion because I read someone's
English translation of it on Ancestry and they said she was "unmarried" and
so I thought that meant the same as "Pai Incognito," but it does not say
"Pai Incognito" on Fransisco's record so maybe Antonio was "known" but just
not well accepted?

I'm going to take Cheri's advice and try to piece together Francisco's
siblings to see if that helps to connect the Manuel you just found to
Francisco and sort out this "single" versus "absent antonio". At least we
took "unknown" out of the mix, at least in the sense that it's not
mentioned.
