I have travelled Space-A many times but not since 1999. I have flown into Lajes from Charleston Air Force Base (AFB), SC, McGuire AFB, NJ, Dover AFB, Baltimore/Washington airport (BWI), and Philadelphia IAP. As Rick said, to do it you must be active duty or retired military or their accompanying family members. There was a nominal fee of about $10 on a military aircraft or $15 on a military-contracted commercial aircraft. This is very cheap but risky. If there are no flights or seats available one could get stuck somewhere so always make sure to have funds for commercial tickets if needed. I do believe the current scheduled military passenger service to Lajes Air Base departs McGuire AFB, NJ on flights that originate at BWI. The site that Rick provided a link for has links to all of the major military passenger terminals that you might find some schedule information.
