Marcos, Thank you for the excellent explanation.

Now, I just need to figure out when the de/da/do/dos is referring to a holy
name/saint, a location or a family. But; we all thrive on challenges, don’t
we!?

Hi everyone,
Maybe as I was born and brought up in Brazil and speak Portuguese as my first
language I could try to shed some light in issue of surname  suffix.
As Cheri said, regardless of having the suffix or not the surname remains the
same.
In the past people added suffixes, such as da, de, dos which are exactly the
same as “Von” in German or “Van” in Dutch, to make them sound more important or
noble.
Since the 50s in Brazil, some family branches started getting rid of them, so
rather being Maria de Figueiredo de Magalhães, she would be registered simply
Maria Figueiredo de Magalhães.
Some families remove the suffix when it is in front of the first surname, so
Manuel da Silva Brito is simply Manuel Silva Brito.
In my family, many de Araújo and de Menezes lost the “de”once it became the
first surname, including an auntie who not only dropped it, but didn’t pass it
to her children.
Sometimes it may also indicate provenance, de Lucena, from the Andalusian city
of Lucena in Spain for instance.
Whether you or you ancestors have the suffix or not the surname remains the
same:
Silveira or da Silveira
Lago ou do Lago
Souza or de Souza
Santos or dos Santos
Regards,
Marcos

It's the same. I'm guessing that sometimes the "dos" got recorded and sometimes
it didn't. Too much vinho.

Hmm, I guess my question should have been phrased differently.  In the same
time period, there are many with the surname Santos but; only a few who go by
dos Santos.  Different family lines?  No other surnames are included on any of
the dos Santos that I’ve seen but; Santos sometimes stands alone and sometimes
is accompanied by other surnames.

Santos is the surname. "dos" the prefix.

Literally:
dos= of the (plural)
Santos= Saints.

If one uses the back-slashes for the surname both Santos and dos /Santos/ would
show up with only Santos as the surname.  They are two distinctly different
