Some people love mailing lists and some love forums. Peoples reasons are many and varied but I have seen a few really good implementations that use both and tie them together. With a good implementation this works REALLY well, you can have two people talking on a thread, one on mail and one of forum and neither realise.
It's certainly better than having both a list and forums separately and the same issues discussed on both!
