witch user have you in /etc/backuppc/hosts?
you need to have something like:

linux-test  0  root
    

The user specified in the hosts file receives email about failures and
is allowed to view and restore backups through the web interface but
is not relevant when making backups.

You need to be able to ssh from the backuppc server as the user
backuppc (or whatever the server uses) to the client as root without
the password prompt. 

  
Right, I knew that.  What I don't understand is why I can't get root access without a password any more.  Any thoughts?
