Right, I knew that.  What I don't understand is why I can't get root
access without a password any more.  Any thoughts?

Check that the key from the server's /home/backuppc/.ssh directory is
correct in /root/.ssh/authorized_keys2 on the client.  Also be sure
that the authorized_key2 file and all directories above it are
only accessible by root.

As far as I can tell everything is just as it should be.  I'm stumped.

Did you try passwordless login with the -v option?  This should indicate any
errors.  Errors are also logged to a log file, but I don't recall which one.
