I prefer to always use rsync with SSH because it encrypts all the
transfered data.  But on my Windows machines I didn't have time to set
up Cygwin with an ssh server, so I'm using the rsyncd package that is
downloadable from the BackupPC sourceforge site.  (rsyncd transmits data
unencrypted).  I'll eventually get rsync over SSH running on my Windows
machines too, once I get some spare time.

Obviously encrypted data is safer than non-encrypted data.  But if
you're not worried about people on your local network using packet
sniffers, then using rsyncd (non-encrypted) isn't a major concern.  I
think (but I'm not sure) that smb transfers data unencrypted as well.
