i can vouch for the relative reliability of DAT72 tapes, but a tape is a
tape and is prone to stretching and does wear out. you wont find a more
reliable tape in that storage category or lower.
tape is just the old stand-by and will be expensive long term because tapes
are not cheap and must be bought often and the drive will be expensive and
need cleaned regularly and replaced every few years. you will also have to
deal with aging technology and the old tapes becoming so obsolete that you
wont be able to replace your drive at some point and no modern drive will
read the tapes.
if you want reliability in the capacities your are looking at i would
suggest buying some 40-80GB hard disks and put them in a hot-swap caddy or
just use USB or Firewire. additionally, these interfaces are standard and
advancements on these standards typically are backwards compatible so USB3
and USB4 will likely be USB1.1 compatible.
i am 1 of 2 IT managers at a 60Million dollar division of a 3Billion dollar
company and have some pretty thorough knowledge of backup methods and
devices like tape drives, so i advise you with my experience backing up the
advice that DAT72 is your best option for tape but do consider disk based
backups as a strong alternative.
