The IO::Dirent support resulted in a major performance boost for us,  
I'd say that alone is worth the upgrade. We don't use Debian, but have  
been running BackupPC 3.1.0 installed from source for a while now. No  
breakage after upgrading from 3.0.0 and haven't heard of any major  
breakage on this list either. BackupPC has pretty much been rock solid  
for us.
