Assuming your are using Vmware Server 2 you can trigger a VM snapshot 
using vmware-vim-cmd.

vmware-vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms
vmware-vim-cmd vmsvc/snapshot.create 112
vmware-vim-cmd vmsvc/snapshot.get 112
vmware-vim-cmd vmsvc/snapshot.removeall 112
