The HP Smart Array P212 does specifically support tape drives, and the HP Storageworks 1/8 G2 does specifically claim support for that card, but in the past it has been recommended to put tape drives on their own controllers even if it is supported on the RAID controller. But as you say, that support is a feature of the card and is not a normal feature of RAID controllers.
