Hi all,

I believe the problem could be that you wrote eof to the drive using the non-rewinding device, unless you issued a rewind separately.
However, the tape being unlabeled doesn't entirely fit that theory.

Just in case, here is the string I use to wipe a tape:
sudo mt -f /dev/st0 eof

I think that should be mt -f ... weof 2

The "w" is optional. The 2 may make a difference as by convention, 2 EOF marks are considered an End of Data / End of tape and thus will make it clear that this tape is really not containing data.

Also, do make sure to rewind beforehand, as Rob mentioned, unless it was freshly loaded into the drive.

A tape without a Bacula label at its beginning but containing readable data will not be used by Bacula, which is the way it should be.

Are you sure the tape's write protect flag is disengaged?

If none of my suggestions help, please reply with the version of bacula you are using. Also, how many drives do you have? Is it possible the label command is referencing the wrong drive?

And if all this doesn't lead anywhere, try using btape. You'll have to unmount/release in Bacula, or stop the SD first, but then you'll have a tool to first investigate, then explicitly wipe and manually relabel. After that, using the bconsole 'add' command should get things sorted out.

However, if this is needed, the investigation step should not be skipped -- it's a good idea to be able to really trust the Bacula labeling process.

Cheers,

Arno

I have a tape “NTA658” that had an apparent barcode label error

dev/nst0 erase. I’m now trying to relabel it (new label = ARR379L8”)
    but I get the following:
