Well, it's primarily your interpretation. Many many scholars, jurists, and
commentatators have had and still have very different interpretations of
jihAd.

Here is a mainstram traditional sunni site's description of jihad and
it's conditions:

http://www.livingislam.org/icd_e.html

""The position of the law is that only at such a time when it can be
reasonably proven that there are aggressive designs against Islam and
there are concerted efforts to eject Muslims from their legally
acquired property and that military campaigns are being launched to
eradicate them.
At such a time the ruler can declare and execute the provisions of
Jihad. It is a condition that there be a leader of the Muslims, an
Imam, to declare combative Jihad.""

Iskandar:
And there is no Covenant in Islam to give a central authority to one
interpretation over the other.

Gilberto:
Yes, that makes it more democratic.

Iskandar:
So, various interpretations have caused
sectarian warfare. They are still causing sectarian warfare, and killing,
even now. In Iraq, for instance.

Gilberto:
No, in general greedy power-hungry people cause violence. It is a lot
less important whether they agree or disagree about metaphysical or
religious statements. The different sides aren't killing each other
because they disagree about Ali (ra). They are killing each other
because they want power to run the country.
