Question: Are walkers safe for babies, or are doorway jumpers better?
Dr. Stern: The American Academy of Pediatrics actually tried - without success - to
have walkers banned because they're so dangerous. In Canada, they passed a regulation
that the apparatus had to be wider than the doorway of a stairwell, effectively
banning them unless the manufacturers retooled. The walker itself isn't harmful to a
child's development, though it does nothing to promote walking. But despite its sturdy
appearance, it can turn over - and down will come baby, walker and all. Needless to
say, this can be particularly dangerous near stairs, or on uneven surfaces where the
wheels can catch an edge. Jumpers are fun and, if safely mounted, not a hazard. Most
babies, especially the very active ones, love bopping around in them. They really come
in handy when you need to keep baby out of mischief and nearby while you cook dinner
or balance the checkbook. (So if you want to invest in a toy that is safe and
entertaining, the jumper is the way to go.) Just don't use the device as a substitute
for interacting with your child or for letting him explore the world on his own two
feet.
