I would opt for merging gtk3 branch to master and dropping gtk2
support in new releases. The only thing that stops me is that
gtkspell and gtk3 do not work together. Peter has filed a bug report
on gtkspell but it received little attention from gtkspell's
developers' side:

On the other hand gedit3 _has_ spellchecking, though
$ ldd /usr/bin/gedit | grep spell
$
yields nothing.
