And, BTW, Pawel and Peter, what's your vision on GTK+2 and GTK+3 branches? Do you plan to
support both, or GTK+3 would become the new "HEAD" branch with GTK+2 going to
trash?

I would opt for merging gtk3 branch to master and dropping gtk2 support in new
releases. The only thing that stops me is that gtkspell and gtk3 do not work
together. Peter has filed a bug report on gtkspell but it received little
attention from gtkspell's developers' side:
 <URL:https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=675504>

On the other hand gedit3 _has_ spellchecking, though
$ ldd /usr/bin/gedit | grep spell
$
yields nothing.

Thanks for pointing that out--I hadn't tried gedit's spell checking!

Before GtkSpell, Balsa used a check-on-demand spell checker like gedit's "Check spelling"
tool, and can still be configured --without-gtkspell to use it. That builds and runs fine with
gtk3 (although currently it does nothing...need to look into that :). Gedit's "highlight
misspelled words" tool is implemented using a fork of GtkSpell. Balsa could of course do the
same, but I'd _much_ rather avoid it! I guess the gedit devs just got tired of waiting...

Best,

Peter
