BES-enabled devices synchronize some of their databases over the air.
These databases are locked for access through USB.

If I recall correctly, the same happens using the backup utility of
the desktop software that comes with the device.

Reseting the device to the initial state should do the trick:

On my Pearl, Options->Security->General Settings, launch the context
menu and then select "Erase Handheld"

But I guess that it should be a less drastic method. Maybe disabling
the wireless synchronization in the device (for example, in the
contacts application, options->Wireless synchronization: no)
