I tend to agree with you in most cases - automatically generated code
isn't really that useful. Autoconf/Automake is the one tool I tend to
see commonly that deserves an exception, I feel.

Specifically, the configure script is an almost completely static thing
that is required only for doing some detection. The content of it does
not vary per-machine.

Without it, it becomes difficult for the average Emacs user to grab CVS,
compile, and have it work. They suddenly need a new external package
installed to support the configure script.

So, I would suggest that, for this one file, you make an exception. It
lowers the bar for testers *dramatically* which, from what I have seen,
pays well in early detection of bugs.
