Personally I find the short time it takes to start BBEdit not a big deal. At five seconds on my G4 Powerbook I fail to see how it can be unbearable or inconvienient. If your time is so critical you can’t afford the startup time then neither BareBones or this list can help.
I love the nerve of people like you telling me what I should or should not find inconvenient. Have you ever used BBEdit a lot with the FTP feature? It is turtle-slow. Try opening a file in BBEdit using the built-in FTP, then try opening the same file using something like Transmit (a great app from a great company that doesn't treat legitimate customers like thieves). It is on the order of 10-100x slower using BBEdit. If I have 20 FTP documents open in BBEdit, I tend to like to keep them open, because even with the otherwise-convenient workspace feature, it takes MINUTES to launch BBEdit and have it reopen all those documents through FTP. Starting up and shutting down BBEdit repeatedly to work around the fact that Bare Bones wishes to treat paying customers like criminals is a real pain in the ass when you've got a lot of FTP documents open. Try it sometime, you might have a different opinion.
Just because you don't find it inconvenient doesn't mean that other people don't.
