Thanks too for the grep suggestions, but the problem there is (and I
failed to make this clear) there can be hundreds of lines between one
number and the next. I could see no way of dealing with the problem
with grep, short of a tortuous loop, and that seems to be confirmed.
What I really need is a BB spread-sheet for manipulating text, but I
expect all the people at BB can write perl in their sleep and see no
need to play down to the dumbest segment of the market.
