Sometimes the messenger deserves to be shot.
As Perl's own advocates say, there are a million ways to code the
same thing in Perl. Unfortunately, none of them are really optimal.
That's why no one can ever agree on anything.
I prefer a language that enforces good practices. Harder to learn?
You bet (but not as hard as it is to learn to write Perl "well,"
apparently). Inflexible? Absolutely. But if your "creativity" is
restricted, maybe the next guy won't have such a hard time figuring
out what the hell you did or why you did it. Verbose? Definitely, but
you don't have to be an experienced programmer to decipher the syntax.
