I think that creator ---> type ----> extension.
e.g. if you want to turn an .m4a into a file that iTunes will
recognize as an audiobook, it is not enough to change the extension
to .m4b. You'll also need to change the type code -- select the file
in the Finder and Command-I or use SuperGetInfo.
