e.g. if you want to turn an .m4a into a file that iTunes will recognize as an audiobook, it is not enough to change the extension to .m4b. You'll also need to change the type code -- select the file in the Finder and Command-I or use SuperGetInfo.

That, I guess, must have something to do with the iTunes DB and a specific type-based association. The general hierarchy is, or at least recently was:

creator -> extension -> type

...or, more specifically:

custom setting -> creator -> extension -> type
