BTW, you didn't mention the LED current limiting resistor---you need
that because your transistor can pass multiple amps when GPIO is 3.3V
and the drain is at 5V-Vled, i.e. around 3.5V. Lack of the resistor
could have damaged the transistor as well, although it would have
damaged the LED as well I think.
