This is the circuit which may or may not render well in ASCII. o +5V | ||| R ||| 330ohm | _V_ LED | |--+ GPIO -->------| | |--+ _|_ GND BTW, you didn't mention the LED current limiting resistor---you need that because your transistor can pass multiple amps when GPIO is 3.3V and the drain is at 5V-Vled, i.e. around 3.5V.
