> beginner ... recommended books other than the camel ... Apparently, the original Camel had two chapters that beginners would love -- "Common Tasks in Perl" and "Real Perl Programs". Later Camels removed this sort of material. The essence of this material, greatly expanded and wonderfully edited was eventually published as "Perl Cookbook". It is an absolutely fabulous resource. If the Camel 2nd edition was my all time favorite language reference, and I am starting to fall in love with the 3rd Camel, the Cookbook is my favorite, er, cookbook. (If you know roughly what you want for dinner, the Cookbook gives you detailed recipes to choose from. Some recipes are quick, others focus on being healthy. Almost all of them are delicious.)
