We are stuck on perl 5.8.n on the better systems, 5.6 on some older Solaris boxes.
Sad but true. When working with significant quantities of data some of those trivial performance hits can add up - quickly! I'd love to see (I'd contribute to) an updated fast performance article (hint hint).
