Here's a (potential) Perl 5.8.1 way of doing it, which is likely to be
faster than the sexeger (reversing approach above) method:

  s/.*\K#//;

That's like saying

  s/(.*)#/$1/;

but it saves you from capturing and copying.  I invented it yesterday. ;)
