Are you able to get the KDE 4 desktop login ? Gnome desktop is not present in the default install. I will publish a Gnome group package soon to get a full Gnome desktop from the the repository. If you are not getting the desktop, do this: Drop to console login from the System menu in the KDM screen. You will get command line mode. There login as the privileged user you created. "root" login is not going to work since root is a role. Once you are in as user you can su to root via pfexec su - (this is somewhat a sudo-ish setup using OpenSolaris Role Based Access Control) Now send me the contents of the file /var/log/kdm.log. Send it only to me, do not cc the list for big attachments. BTW is this machine a P3 ? I do not think P3 or older is going to work for this build of Belenix components.
