what I did:

apt-get install squeezecenter
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED
slimserver
The following NEW packages will be installed
squeezecenter
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 16.7MB of archives.
After unpacking 332kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y

slimserver got removed, but not the init script, so:
update-rc.d -f slimserver remove
and removed slimserver from /etc/init.d

I needed to go through the setup wizardry again, because while the new
squeezecenter installed, the old config was not imported from
/etc/slimserver.
So I copied everything from the /etc/slimserver folder to
/etc/squeezecenter.

restarted squeezecenter

I'm fine now, I think...
Maybe I shouldn't have tried this on my main server :-)
