Based on what I said in the OP I was hopping to hear something from the
SD developers regarding the future of MusicIP. I understand that it
might not be a priority, but I think it has become essential for many
people and having a way to generate "intelligent" mixes would be a good
selling point for SD/Logitech. (Understood that there "might" be some
copyright issues involved were "Logitech" to advertise using the word
MusicIP as a core feature of the player)

I thought of using the solution you suggest a while back, but I do not
use my main FLAC music library "exclusively" with the Squeezebox server.
I've  been transcoding my FLAC library to other formats for use on other
players some of which depend on my existing path/filename structure to
get info about the currently playing track. Changing my current tagging
scheme which correlates the tags Artist/Album/Filename to the
corresponding transcoded path and file structuore for the target players
would be too disruptive.
