Neither sounds like the correct behavior. Filtering should keep both the composers out of artists, and albums on which a contributor is a composer out of their album list. I'm guessing that's why you're seeing the empty track lists - the filtering is kicking in at this level instead of the album level.
There are a number of empty folder bugs like this in 7.6, but many of them are fixed in the onebrowser work. You might want to consider checking out onebrowser and running it instead. See the other two or three related threads to see what's missing from onebroswer at the current time.
