I don´t know if it makes sense to read Tags case sensitive. There is no standard but a way most applications handle it.
Here you can see that every genre has more or less a number: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_ID3v1-Genres Now if i open an album with wrongly spelled genre Tag in mp3tag for example it shows me the correct name cause it knows to interpret it. So SyNtHpOp is shown as Synthpop cause it is defined as genre No 147. The standard doesn´t seem to define the case sensitivity at all to my understanding!
