Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, etc., have done pretty well on the Xbox LIVE Arcade, despite requiring each machine (and sometimes each player) to purchase a copy. There have been some graphical embellishments and helpful interface hints, but I think AI has been a necessary component for their success, alongside the existing pool of connected gamers on the service. It's also clear that game licenses for various popular games have already been acquired, so a new pay site might need to head into more niche territory.
