I've run the Soubitez models, with Union halogen headlights, for years. The one on my brevet bike has been in use since 1990. I have a friction shift lever mounted on the seat tube to engage and disengage the unit on this bike.
Yes, you can run full fenders. Properly set up units rarely slip on wet tires although worn ones will. I've had some success by regrooving the drive surface with a dremal tool to get a bit more life from them. They do get covered with gunk, but like the old Timex commercials, "They take a lickin' and keep on tickin'." Can't comment on how they work with studs cuz I don't run 'em.
