OK, I did finally look this up. The saddles I owned were Ideale 80s, 
not 88s. Mine did not have the aluminum rails, but steel ones, like 
Brooks. There's a good description, with illustrations, here:

I also once owned an Ideale 2002, bought in 1976, after about 200 
miles into my Bikecentenial ride. This was a plastic based saddle, 
with a thin leather cover over a thin layer of foam. Also 
comfortable, but not as durable as the all-leather 80/88/90/92s.
