I can add an anecdote to this. Coming up the last significant hill
before work, I looked over on the sidewalk and here's a grandpa
pedaling up the hill same speed as me, pulling a Burleigh with kid
inside! Adding to the insult, he's not even standing on the pedals.
Then I noticed his pedaling cadence was exTREMEly consistent. Sure enough he
had an electric motor drive.
So the purist in me wasn't crazy about this, but what the heck, here's
a grandpa and kid (who would otherwise be in a Buick) out in the fresh
air. If electric assist gets more people like this out of their cars
I'm all for it.

Actually, electric bikes is going to be the missing link to get people out of
their cars and pumping their legs. And since both of us are at a certain age in
baby-boomerdom you're going to see more of us, even me eventually, using these
devices. There is a growing segment of the population using electric devices on
bikes, trikes, velomobiles and wheelchairs. Who's to say one mode is more
important than another?Speaking for myself, I think we need more diversity in
our personal transportation modesthan automobiles, motorcycles, scooters, and
then bicycles. Oh, and roller blades.
