The Crowne Plaza is not a great destination for bikers, but it's not all that
much worse than the original location on Wright St.

If I bike there (and I probably will), I'll take the Starkweather Creek -- just
as I would to get to Wright St. -- but I'll turn on Anderson St., cross
Stoughton Road, and then go through Reindahl park and a series of bike paths
and back streets (all of them marked as a bike route, I think) to the Crowne
Plaza. That's the route Google Maps recommends
(http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=atwood+%26+winnebago+madison+wi&daddr=4402+East+Washington+Ave.+madison+wi&hl=en&geocode=FUWIkQIdWoys-in30tLFhlMGiDGuEDTXsgTWCQ%3BFdwTkgIdJT2t-ikVUhrqjlYGiDFr5KCjGxXZHA&mra=ltm&dirflg=b&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.922255,56.513672&ie=UTF8&ll=43.122945,-89.321122&spn=0.014346,0.027595&z=15&lci=bike).
I've taken it (though never in December) and it's not bad.

I agree, though, that DOT could have found a better site for the meeting. I've
heard rumors that there are several state-owned buildings downtown with large
meeting rooms, good bike and bus access, and plenty of nearby parking. But
perhaps my sources are mistaken.

Please forward.

are they trying to minimize attendance by changing the meeting location at the
last minute and then holding it at a very bike-unfriendly location? I would out
near East Towne tonight and almost got hit twice by motorists who basically are
only looking for car headlights.

NOTE CHANGE OF LOCATION SINCE PREVIOUS ALERTS!

Calling all rail supporters!

It’s time to come together and let our state officials know WE SUPPORT
HIGH-SPEED RAIL.

Transportation officials from Wisconsin and Minnesota have come
together to make a plan for connecting our cities with inter-city
passenger rail--and they want to know what you think!

WisDOT is holding open house public meetings about the state of
passenger rail in Wisconsin. The Madison meeting is this coming
Tuesday, December 7, 5:00-7:00 PM at the Crowne Plaza, 4402 East
Washington Ave. (across from East Towne.)

What an opportunity to show that Wisconsinites want to modernize our
transportation system. We want to create the jobs and boost the
economy with efficient passenger rail. We want to connect our cities
with the rest of the Midwest and we want to start NOW.

But we need to show up. State officials have said that they think the
success or failure of these hearings could make or break the HSR
project in WI. If tons of supporters turn out for these hearings, or
at least many more supporters than opponents, then we can persuade
Governor-Elect Walker to move forward with this landmark project.

So come by the public meeting, bring you friends, and voice your
support! Please pass this message on to your family, friends and
colleagues.
