I rode in from the near east side to the west side of campus with no problems at all. I do have studded ice tires (so I didn't plan on taking the bus in either direction), but it probably could have been ridden without them.
I'm just unwilling these days to take the chance that I *probably* won't go down on some ice, so I used studded tires from the first snow until March, usually. I don't really understand why most people who ride in the winter or want to ride in the winter don't use them (ok, as far as I know nobody makes studded tires to fit your 40 year old British bike, Mitch, but for most people there are tires to fit their bikes). And, yes, the tires are quite expensive (for bike tires anyway) initially, but since I've used one pair through more than 15 winters, I'd say they're pretty reasonable in the long run. I'd recommend spending $50 or less on the bike you're going to ride through winter - and then spending twice that on tires (which will probably outlive the rest of the components on a winter bike). c -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mitchell Nussbaum Sent: Friday, December 20, 2013 10:17 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [Bikies] How was your commute today? Based on the news reports, I expected bike riding to be sheer hell this morning. I figured that the roads would be rideable on the way home, so I got out my bike and planned to put it on the bus for the ride to work. But when I got outside, I found that conditions weren't all that bad. The residential streets in my neighborhood were icy, but the ice had a lot of texture and my unstudded tires had plenty of traction. And the major streets were fine -- wet and occasionally slushy -- and the bike paths were OK. So my commute from the near west side was pretty good. How were things in other parts of the city? _______________________________________________ Bikies mailing list [email protected] http://lists.danenet.org/listinfo.cgi/bikies-danenet.org _______________________________________________ Bikies mailing list [email protected] http://lists.danenet.org/listinfo.cgi/bikies-danenet.org
