Hi Hans,

I deal with the cable issue by not having one, using a single speed coaster
brake. I use a fairly low gear, 38 X 20, and plod along at 12-13 mph. My daily
commute is 6 miles each way, haven't missed a day yet due to weather.

I have used Sturmey Archer 3 speed hubs, which are ok if you use a very light
oil and they don't have any moisture in them, but I found that I get to work in
about the same amount of time with one gear as with 3. So it's not worth the
bother with the extra hassle and maintenance to have multiple gears.

I also use insulated Rocky boots. My winter bike has big pedals to give a
decent platform for the boots. They may not be as ergonomically efficient as
biking specific shoes, but my feet are warm without the need for electric socks
or chemical-based warmers. I wear bulky mittens from Farm & Fleet (around $30)
that keep my hands comfy even on the cold days we've had.

I pre-warm my boots, mittens, and head gear before I go out by placing them
over a heat register. That seems to help as well.

Just finished lowest-temperature ride thus far in my life: ... Main problem
was that the rear derailleur cable got sticky so it wouldn't' shift to
smaller gears on rear cluster.  ... Heat
Holder socks inside Rocky winter boots = warm feet!  And I just love my
Canadian Shooter's Mittens - my hands actually got sweaty.  Without Moose
Mitts.
...
Any thoughts on the cable lubrication business?  I usually use T9 on them.
Also wondering whether any of you have experience with internal gear hubs in
cold weather like this.
