It appears that Ethan was so eager to skip the country that he didn't have time
to post anything about the Tobermory Christmas Bird Count. 46 species were
located and the highlights were a Red-headed Woodpecker in Tobermory, a pair of
Canada Geese (rare bird for this count) eating apples at a feeder, and a
Northern Hawk-owl in Bruce National Park (on the main road into Cypress Lake
about 1 km from highway 6). Very few winter finches were located.

Several people have been unsuccessful trying to find the Dyer's Bay Hawk-owl
and to the best of my knowledge, it has not been located since Monday morning.

Most of the area lakes have frozen over but there are still lots of ducks on
Lake Huron. There was a third-hand report of a Snowy Owl in the Ferndale area
(highway 6) on Wednesday.

Wiarton, Hanover/Walkerton and Owen Sound are all holding their Christmas Bird
Counts this weekend.

Happy holidays,
Cindy Cartwright

With the relatively mild conditions so far this season, I thought the
following might get counters excited as to the possibilities for upcoming
CBCs:

http://www.ohiobirds.org/news.php?News_ID9

and a direct link to the photos:

Together with the recent Fork-tailed Flycatcher at Hillman Marsh, who
would ever image such species during the month of December at our
latitude?
